NEWCOMERS TO PORTUGUESE 1

In this initiation course, students learn basic grammar and become able to: greet people, introduce and talk about themselves, family and friends, describe their tastes, hobbies and tasks and ask a variety of questions. Focus is on the present tense.The mostly common future tense used in colloquial Brazilian Portuguese is also covered.

NEWCOMERS TO PORTUGUESE 2

In this course, students expand their vocabulary and become more fluent in the present and future tenses through a variety of oral dynamics that emphasize the most commonly used regular and irregular verbs. Past tenses (perfect and imperfect) are introduced allowing students to talk about a broader range of subjects.

INTERMEDIATE 1

This course reinforces knowledge of present, future and past tenses through a variety of audio, video, and other interactive activities and grammar review points. In this level, students are also introduced to compound tenses of the past, becoming better equipped to talk about past events and tell stories that alternate present and past tenses. 

ADVANCED

 

In this course, students will practice conversation and be introduced to the uses of subjunctive. Combined with other tenses already learned, students will be able to: talk about emotions,  expectations, doubts, possibilities/impossibilities, dreams and plans both in the present, past and future tenses. The commonly used personal infinitive is also covered.

PORTUGUESE FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS 2

In this course, students will be introduced to the past tense (both perfect, imperfect and the compound past tenses). This class has a strong focus on the applied use of all the tenses learned and includes a variety of in-class discussions of contemporary subjects and cultural aspects of life in Brazil. Students will also engage in multimedia activities as a way to improve listening comprehension.

PORTUGUESE FOR

SPANISH SPEAKERS 1

 

Designed for those students who speak Spanish (including native and non-native Spanish speakers) this course draws on the main differences and similarities between the two languages to create a dynamic and highly effective learning experience. In this first level, students will acquire working knowledge of Portuguese in the present and future tenses while building a fair amount of vocabulary.

All courses are 10 weeks long with classes once a week from 7 to 9 PM.

CONVERSATIONAL PORTUGUESE

This workshop is a touch-up on the mostly used tenses in Brazilian Portuguese through the discussion of contemporary general topics. Each topic is explored through a variety of materials, including featured articles and short videos, and then a guided in-class discussion. Besides refreshing grammar and acquiring new vocabulary, students learn argumentation techniques so as to base their opinions and defend a specific point of view.

PAST TENSES WORKSHOP

In Portuguese, past tenses are undoubtedly, the trickiest ones. Not to say that they are the base for more complex tenses such as Subjunctive. In this workshop, students will master the use of the different past tenses in Portuguese, learning to use each one in the appropriate situations. 

BRAZILIAN NEWS

 

Perfect for those that want to practice Portuguese while discussing the latest events in Brazil, this workshop provides a weekly news digest featuring stories from a variety of fields such as Economics, Society, Science, Technology, and Culture. Classes are structured to engage students in productive discussions while teaching them to express their opinions clearly and consistently.

SLANGS AND MEMES WORKSHOP

This workshop will immerse students in the coloquialism of Portuguese. Slangs, expressions and jokes will be learned in an engaging and fun environment where students will be able to develop their oral skills with a different twist.

SUBJUNCTIVE WORKSHOP

This workshop focuses on the various Subjunctive cases and their combinations with other tenses. Designed to strengten the abilities of Advanced students, this workshop blends dynamic in-class activities and in-depth discussions and is a must for those that want to speak correctly in all situations.

GRAMMAR WORKSHOP

In this workshop, students review the most tricky grammar points of Brazilian Portuguese acquiring confidence to use pronouns, objects, prepositions and other language elements and speak up in any situation.

The workshops listed above are the most commonly offered. Seasonal workshops may be offered at times.

Unless otherwise noted, workshops are 5 weeks long with classes once a week from 7 to 9 PM.

Students should have proficiency at the Intermediate level and above to take workshops.
